Some of the indisputably greatest works of art and literature were produced within rigid stylistic idioms. The creative energies of Petrarch, Shakespeare, and Spenser were not hampered by the formidable restrictions on the sonnet: fourteen lines or lambic pentameter with fixed rhyme scheme treating only a single sentiment or emotion. To see whether Mozart was stifled by the demands of the sonata allegro form one need only listen to the "Jupiter" Symphony. An example of quantum sheep poetry: "Warm drift, graze gentle/ White below the sky, soft sheep/ Mirrors, snow clouds." This innovation has given rise to an entirely new form of poetry - lambic pentameter. Some say there are no rules. Like the iambic pentameter, it must be learned. Two rhyming lines in lambic pentameter are sometimes called a heroic couplet. Some say that it consists of a line of five iambs.

It's a common form of metre that combines syllable counting and stress counting to produce lines of fixed numbers of stressed syllables alternating with unstressed syllables. Thus iambic pentameter (greek penta = five) is a line of ten syllables or five iambic feet. One iambic foot is composed of an unstressed syllable followed by a stressed syllable.

Shakespeare was indeed one of the more famous exponents of the Lambic pentameter: "A sheep, a lamb, my Kingdom for a lamb!" (Ramchard III) "Oh, Rameo, Rameo, wherefore art though Rameo .... Though art thyself, though not a Merino, What's Merino? It is nor forefoot nor hindfoot nor fleece, nor horn. O, be some other name Belonging to a sheep" (Rameo and Juliet). However, he wasn't constrained to this style, as exemplified by the famous "To beef, or not to beef; that is the question" (Lamlet).

How come this gets a second thread and leaves my devastatingly witty reply to the initial thread languishing in obscurity? I feel shorn of dignity and don't know wether I should try again or just ram my head into the wall and slink off sheepishly. Last edited by stuartnz; 20-Sep-2008 at 12:55.

Nice to know. I can't see a spotlight without wanting to hogget, even if it is a bit of a gambol at times.
