| Use the simple present tense to express a routine, like this, [1] She wins the competition every year, and afterwards she always spends a lot of money on clothes. Use the simple past tense to talk about the past: [2] She won the competition. Use the progessive to talk about "now", these days, at the moment, etc, [3] Now she is spending a lot of money on clothes. Use the present perfect when you want to connect an event with a previous event in time, [4] [After years of trying] she has [finally] won the competition, and now she will be able to spend a lot of money on clothes. Use the presen perfect to express "quite recently" or "just now". The following structures are ungrammatical: [5] She has [just now] won the competition, and now she is spending a lot of money on clothes. => She is doing two things at once: (1) winning the competition and (2) spending money on clothes. [5] She has [just now] won the competition, and now she spends a lot of money on clothes. => She just won the competition so there hasn't yet been enough time for spend money to become a routine. Spelling Note, a lot is two words, not one. |
