fare well and cry

Hi
As the man (bid) fare well to his friend, he almost (cry).
Put the verbs in the correct tenses. Please give me all possible answers. Tell me if "As" has to do any thing with the tense here. And of course don't forget to tell me WHY.

In the context below, as is synonymous with while.

As the man WAS DOING THIS, he also DID THIS:
As the man was bidding farewell to his friend, he almost cried.
The man almost cried, as he was bidding farewell to his friend.

Spelling Note, farewell is one word, not two.
