Default Past perfect

Do I have to use the past perfect when a time word is use to tell when was the action?

ex:I had had 3 cups of coffee before I came here
or: I had 3 cups of coffee before I came here

Thanks

Default Re: Past perfect

Usually the Past Perfect describes the first action of the actions took place in the past.
eg
I called him after Jane had left.
The first action is that Jane left and then, I made the call
