Default Clause elements

I'm currently learning about clause elements. However, I'm having some difficulty in understanding and differentiating between these three clause elements: object, complement and adverbial. Is there any way in which I can test whether a part of a sentence is either an an object, complement or adverbial?

Thanks, in advance!
