Default relative pronouns

hai,
could you please help me out when to use 'which' and when to use 'that'
while using them as relative pronouns.

eg
I know the house that he lives in.(or)
I know the house which he lives in.

similarly is it
this is the boy that i told you of.
this is the boy whom i told you of.

kindly help me .Iam in great confusion.
thank you.

As far as I remember the rules... there's no difference between /that/ and /which/ in YOUR examples. However, there are some, in which there is a difference, but I don't quite remember them at the moment.

When it comes to your second example... that vs whom. Both are correct.
/That/ is less formal, more coloquial and actually nowdays more popular as well. /Whom/ is considered to be more "stiff" and it is most often used in formal speech.

Hope this helps,

Correct me if I'm wrong,

Take care,
