| could you please help me out when to use 'which' and when to use 'that' while using them as relative pronouns. eg I know the house that he lives in.(or) I know the house which he lives in. similarly is it this is the boy that i told you of. this is the boy whom i told you of. kindly help me .Iam in great confusion. thank you. |

| As far as I remember the rules... there's no difference between /that/ and /which/ in YOUR examples. However, there are some, in which there is a difference, but I don't quite remember them at the moment. When it comes to your second example... that vs whom. Both are correct. /That/ is less formal, more coloquial and actually nowdays more popular as well. /Whom/ is considered to be more "stiff" and it is most often used in formal speech.
