Default Is this American? "the situation invited me to do so"

Hi!

I have a question concerning an expression I've tried to translate from Swedish.

Is this American?:

"the situation invited me to do so"

Example: Let's consider I receive a lot of junk email. Then I would say: The situation invited me to be very careful to which mailing list I would subscribe.

Thank you

It doesn't sound very natural to me. How about 'the situation made me...'
