    Talking 66-vice versa

    Dear all

    Hello

    Which one is used more?

… Translation from German to English rather than …

    1. English to German

    2. Vice versa

I mean can I use rather than vice versa or not?

    Thanks a million

    Matilda

    Hi Matilda,

You can use either. You could also say "...translation from German to English rather than the reverse."

That depends on the context, which is hidden in Matilda's example.

    For example:

"I prefer students who can make a competent translation from English to German rather than vice versa."

    has a different meaning from:

"I prefer students who can make a competent translation from English to German or vice versa."

Both are correct usage, would you not agree? If I were a competent translator of German to English, though, I would rather you were on my interview board, Curmudgeon .
