i know it (put one over)means to fool somebody, but what does it mean when it comes to sports? i searched the phrase on google, and got several pages relating to football, but didn't have a clear understanding about what it really meant.

It would mean "score a goal" in a sport where you score by "putting the ball over" the posts, for example rugby.
