"a little" means "some" while "little" means "almost no"
so do "a few" and "few"(use for countable nouns)
    For examples:
I have little sugar(=I have no sugar)
I have a little sugar(=I have some sugar)

I have few friends(I have no friend)
I have a few friends( I have some friends)
