Default Possessive used before gerund?

I remember 'way back when I was in school that I was taught that, when using a gerund, the noun/pronoun preceeding the gerund should be posssesive (i.e., "Patient is a 43-year-old male who comes to the emergency room by ambulance with a chief complaint of his heart's racing.")...is this still correct?
