Default "in the end " or "at the end"?

Could you show me the differences between " in the end" & "at the end". I'm always confused with them.

we say "at the end of the day/week/month/year,etc"
For an example:"At the end of this week, there's going to be an exciting footbal match"

but you use in the end to express the meaning"end of a situation"
for an example: "He was seriously injured in the car accident, but in the end,he was still alive".

Cheers
