7 - science and technology I'd be very pleased if you correct this short article about science, inventions and so on... It's really quite short...however, it contains hundreds of mistakes (I believe espacially grammar ones), probably SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY Science and technology bringing us new inventions and discoveries have always been very important for the mankind. From the beginning of people’s existence they have used tools, various types of energy and materials. But all these technologies, tools and materials had to be invented or discovered first. Those who discovered them must have been a really very clever people and we should thank them because if they didn’t live, we wouldn’t be able to use computers, calculators and other appliances we certainly “need“ for our lives. However, I guess if the Penicillin wasn’t discovered by Fleming, it would have been soon or later discovered by someone else, probably. Nevertheless, we all must admit that we would very hardly survive without some of the things we can afford nowadays, although there are still many things, improvements, drugs and other technologies waiting for being discovered. In the early human history, the only power available was muscle power augmented by primitive tools, such as the wedge or lever. People used just the fire to grill their meat and food, but that was all. It also took them a little time to “discover“ the fire and learn how to use it. Of course, people could have used also power of wind, solar, tidal, water or geothermic energy, but they didn’t know how to do it. Later, the invention of the wheel was followed by the watermill and windmill. And many other important inventions followed. One of the most important and “popular“ is invention of steam engine. James Watt was the one who improved it. He based all his studies on inventions of Papin and other famous inventors. So, the fisrt steam engine was manufactured and other inventions based on steam engine were born. For example, first steamship (it can be said it is “discovered“ by Robert Fulton) and railway (and train) was invented. The sudden acceleration of technical and economic development that begain in Britain in the second half of the 18th century is called “the Industrial Revolution“. There were really many other inventions, but if I spoke about all of them, it would last a really long time; in addition, I am not just a scientist and to tell the truth, I don’t like Physics (although I believe it’s a very interesting science), so I couldn’t name all the inventions also because of one simple reason: I don’t know them all. I am not going to tell you about how a computer works, as I can’t describe it even in my native language. I’d just like to remind you that all inventions including medicine inventions are very important for mankind. In spite of this it can be also said world would be “better“ without some inventions. For example, the atomic bomb and some others. People can abuse these inventions in some bad ways and that wouldn’t be good for anyone. Genetic engineering is also one of much discussed topics in today’s world. You know, it’s a great fact we’d be able to transplant some organs or body parts, but if we look at it from the other side, we can see people who would perhaps abuse it. |
