Transcriptions help

Hi everyone, I'm new to this forum. I'm a student studying English first year at University. I grew up in USA but I'm studying in a foreign country.However English is my second language, I was wondering if anyone can help me understand transcriptions of words in American English. Here at this University they're confusing me with the British English. I have a test coming up soon so if anyone is available to explain. I was never taught trancriptions in U.S. before.
