| ------------------------------------------------------------ Here I give you some questions after reading one newspaper article. 2. What does "to be up for sth" mean? It appears in the headline of a newspaper article. The sentence: Surf's not up for Newquay as reef plan flops ------------------------------------------------------------- 3. What is a "stag do"? Sentence: "It would be fantastic for Newquay, turning it at a stroke into a world-class surfing destination rather than what it is becoming now, a cheap and cheerful place for a stag do." -------------------------------------------------------------- 4. Who is a "sustainability expert"? -------------------------------------------------------------- 5. Who does "the great and good of Cornwall" refer to? --------------------------------------------------------------- 6. What does "to peel off mean"? Sentence: A team of consultants from New Zealand, ASR, carried out a feasibility study and concluded that a reef made out of sandbags built off one of Newyuay's beaches, Tolcarne, would create two terrific breaks, one peeling off left, the other right. ---------------------------------------------------------------- 7. What does "to blast" in this sentence mean? Sentence(In the article, it appears just behind the previous sentence): One would be ideal for a surfer wanting to blast 200 metres into the beach, the other would ... ----------------------------------------------------------------- 8. What is "a gig racing"? Sentence: The rowing club claims the reef will spoil a triangular course for pilot gig racing which has been used for more than 100 years. ------------------------------------------------------------------ Thanks |

| 1- Can you give the context. It could mean 'when consent is given'. 2- be up for= be ready/prepared for or want to do. Here, it sounds more like the first 3- stag do = party before a man gets married (women have hen dos) 4- a person who works out whether projects will function without destroying the environment (or finances, etc), to see whether the project is viable 5- the important people who control things 6- moving in that direction 7- blast = explode. here, I think it means make a dramatic landing 8- gig = small rowing boat |
