Default Adjectives

How to derive adjectives? If it is obedient from obey, how to derive at that word obedient? How to know what to add to the noun to make it into an adjective?

Unfortunately, there are many different possible ways of making an adjective, so the best way is probably to go to the dictionary, I'm afraid.
