Default punch and knock

Dear teachers,

I have a question to ask:

The boxer _________ his opponent as hard as he could.

a. punched b. knocked
"a" is of course the key. What about "b". Can I use "knock", too?

Looking forward to hearing from you.

Thank you in advance.

Jiang

knock on (a flat surface), knock over (to push over). Boxers usually don't 'knock over" their opponents; they knock 'em out (cold).
