Default stative verbs

What are stative verbs? are which ones that express a situation and not an action? And is "to be"a stative verb?

'Be' can be a number of things, including an auxiliary verb and a copular verb. When we say 'he's French', it's normally called a copular verb (or linking verb), but it is a kind of state.
