You alright?

In UK, people ask 'you alright?' in place of 'how are you?'. What are you suppose to say? 'I am fine' and ask them back 'how are you?' or just say I am alright.

'You alright' is fairly colloquial, so a more relaxed reply might sound more natural than 'I'm fine thanks.How are you?' How about 'OK, and you?' (OK can be changed to good, alright, can't complain, etc depending on how things are, but try not to sound too negative as we tend not to want to hear a long or negative answer to this.

In Somerset, where I grew up, people just say, "All right, then?" The correct response is, "All right" -- rather like "How do you do?" - "How do you do?"
