Default ''Don't worry'' & '' Never mind''

What is the difference between ''Don't worry.'' and ''Never mind.'' ?
Could anyone tell me ?

For example, in the following, Which is better, ''Don't worry.'' or '' Never mind.'' ? Or both phrases will do?

A:'' I'm sorry I'm late.''
B:'' ( )''

Thank you.

Don't worry strikes me as better. I use it more to show it's OK, while never mind is more to calm people down.
