Hello,
I'm having problems differentiating two sets of words. One is fun and funny, while the other is luxury and luxurious. Can you help me please? Thanks!
Hello Meister
"Fun" is a noun. It signifies "lively enjoyment". If you like sailing, you "have fun" when you go sailing. If you're enjoying a party, you're "having fun".
"Funny" is an adjective. It signifies either "comical" (something that makes you laugh) or "strange" (something that puzzles you or seems odd). A comedian is "funny" in the first sense, for instance, if he makes you laugh. A compliment from a colleague may be "funny" in the second sense, if you don't think there was any reason for a compliment.
A "luxury" (countable) is a product which you don't need, e.g. a fur coat or a Rolls-Royce. "Luxury" (non-countable) is "the state of having many luxuries".
"Luxurious" means "like a luxury" or "characterised by luxuries". Thus a "luxurious carpet" might be a thick, expensive carpet.
