    Default gerund

situation: I was telling my experience during my first day of class..I'm still studying in the university now...Is it correct to say

    1. I was nervous and excited before studying in this university.

Also, I want to know the part of speech or the function of the word "studying" in that sentence. Is it a gerund? Thanks!
