In the 1960s and 1970s, "burning one's bra" was popularly considered to be a sign that a woman took her feminist convictions seriously.

Ok that makes perfect sense to me now.
One day while I was driving to my work I listened to the radio and there was a programme of some lady whose mother was caucasian and father afro-american.
At some point she mentioned that black women weren't feministically aware or something and said about her friends something like ´"They would burn their bras if...."
I wasn't able to fully concentrate in listening because I was driving at the same time but somehow that prase caught my ear.
