The key is "b". Could you please explain why "a" isn't correct?

wonder why "as much as" is correct in this sentence,I think it should be "as well as",why?because "as well as" is used in parallel structure like this ("to the cleaner" and "to the professor")

excuse me,but do you mean "the position of a professor is equal to a cleaner" when you say " A cleaner is equal to a professor" .I still think "Language belongs to each member of the society, to the cleaner as well as to the professor" is correct.

A cleaner isn't the same as a professor, but language belongs to them both and the ownership is as unarguable in each case. You can't say 'the same as', because the objects being compared aren't the same. If you want to use same, you need to specify what is the same: either of these would be a possibility:

"Language belongs to each member of the society, to the cleaner in the same way as to the professor."

"Language belongs to each member of the society, to the cleaner to the same extent as to the professor."

Of these, I prefer the second (because it avoids the third "to"). But I have a greater preference for 'as much as'.
