X is the same as/equal to Y; e.g., (class system) A cleaner is equal to a professor . . . Spelling Note cleaner, not clearner.

excuse me,but do you mean "the position of a professor is equal to a cleaner" when you say " A cleaner is equal to a professor" .I still think "Language belongs to each member of the society, to the cleaner as well as to the professor" is correct. can't you point out why the answer is "as much as"?thanks!!

A cleaner isn't the same as a professor, but language belongs to them both and the ownership is as unarguable in each case. You can't say 'the same as', because the objects being compared aren't the same. If you want to use same, you need to specify what is the same: either of these would be a possibility: "Language belongs to each member of the society, to the cleaner in the same way as to the professor." "Language belongs to each member of the society, to the cleaner to the same extent as to the professor." Of these, I prefer the second (because it avoids the third "to"). But I have a greater preference for 'as much as'. b
