Task 4 – State how the tenses below are formed grammatically. Explain positive, negative and question forms:
a) Present simple:
Affirmative: {sub + base form (+s/ es)}
Negative :{ sub + aux. verb” do” +not + base form}
Question: {aux. verb + Do +sub+ base form}
Affirmative: Asia lies in the northern hemisphere.
{Subject +base form +main verb}
Negative: She did not lose her book yesterday.
(Sub+ aux. verb+ main verb)
Question: Do you like coffee?
(Sub+ aux. verb+ main verb.)
b) Present continuous
Affirmative: We are playing foot ball.
(Sub + aux. verb + main verb +verb+ ing)
Negative: They are not going for English class today.
(Sub + aux. verb +be + subject +verb +ing)
Question: Is your girlfriend coming over today? Is your English getting better?
(Aux. verb +is + sub + verb +ing)
c) Present perfect
Affirmative :( sub+ aux. verb + have + past participle)
A) My son has done all his homework.
Negative: (sub+ aux. verb +have +not+ past participle)
I have never ridden a horse.
Question: (Aux.verb ’have’+ sub + past participle.)
C) Have you visited your new school yet?
c) Present perfect continuous
Affirmative: (sub+ aux. verb ‘have ‘+ been+ verb + ing)
1) Julia has been talking on the phone for an hour.
Negative: (sub +aux. verb “have”+ not + been + verb + ing)
2) The phones have not been working all day.
Question: (aux. verb ‘have’+ sub + been +verb +ing)
3) Have you been doing this course for a long time?
Task 5 – Consider the following student errors. After each error, state:
i) What the mistake is.
ii) Why you think it has been made.
iii) How you would go about correcting it.
a) I am a secretary for five years.
• The mistake is, the person is likely to continue being a secretary but her sentence implies that she no longer is a secretary.
• The person is confused because the action started in the past and continues till date.
• The teacher should ask the student if she is still a secretary, if yes then by drawing a time line the teacher can clarify the difference between present simple and present continuous.
d) I have seen him yesterday.
A.) The clause is presented incorrectly because it was something that happened in the past.
B.) It should say: I saw him yesterday. The mistake is probably the confusion, in implying that he may see the person again.
C.) We should explain via games or samples sentences to show the proper use of sentence making.
c) She’s liked him since six months.
i) It’s an incorrect sentence formation. It implies the action is likely to continue.
ii) It should say; <she has liked him for six months>
iii) The SS needs to clarify the tenses .Teaching grammatical forms should make it easier for them to understand. Specifying the usage for and since in present perfect.
d) When have you bought your car?
• It’s asked in an incorrect form, since he is still using the car.
• It should be. When did you buy the car?
• Let SS make pairs and question one another .e.g. did you buy the car...yes, I bought the car.
e) I’ve been knowing her for three months.
i) it’s an incorrect statement.
ii) It should be: I‘ve known her for three months.
iii) You can get SS to change a story, into a different tense to get them, used to differences in each tense: a paragraph with present-perfect can be changed present simple.
Task 6 – Give at least 2 teaching ideas (suitable for the Activate stage of a lesson) for the tenses below.
a) Present simple
> find someone who…activity in which, students have to interview one another in order to complete forms.
>information gaps…Whereby SS ask each other about their habitual action
e) Present continuous
.
• Telling stories: narrate stories combining the tenses that can be based on visual prompts.
• Action in progress: miming is an excellent way to demonstrate actions; SS could guess what the action is.
c) Present perfect:
> Role play: job interview. E.g. have SS interview one another.
> Change the room: have 3 SS leave the room, while the others change it in 5 different ways. (E.g. move the table, dust bin…) The absent SS returns and figures out what has been done.
d) Present perfect continuous
1. Students take a piece of paper with past activity and results written on it.
> You’ve been chopping onions…. You’re crying.
> You’ve been running…..You’re sweating.
Then have SS question each other or guess at why…you are crying’ did you hurt yourself?
2. You can have student do surveys amongst themselves or on campus, on different topics e.g. who has been done certain things the longest.
