Question Were or Was

The sentence is "she mentioned that the team was motivated by their ambition"
Should it be "she mentioned that the team were motivated by their ambition"? That's the one that sounds right to me!

If you view a team as a unit, then "it was", and if you view a team based on its individual contributors, then "they were".

Hint: . . . the team ______ motivated by their . . .
