    Hello Ana

    It has two meanings:

If you canvass (for) people's votes, you ask them to vote for you.

If you canvass for the Acme Political Party, you canvass on behalf of the APP – i.e. on behalf of the APP, you ask for people's votes.

(Also, if you canvass people's opinions about X, you ask people what they think about X.)

    hi
THIS IS THE DEFINITION FOR canvass ,
to try to discover information or opinions by asking people
    here some examples,
The council has been canvassing local opinion/local people to get their thoughts on the proposed housing development.

so I think canvass for like ask for
I dont think for makes it phrasal verb (chang it to another meaning )
    * it's just proposition

Jesse20 is right, but according to the CALD there are three usages alltogether:

    1. canvass (OBTAIN SUPPORT) verb [I or T]
to try to obtain political support or votes, especially by visiting all the houses in an area:
I've been out canvassing for the Labour Party every evening this week.

    2. canvass (ASK) verb [T]
to try to discover information or opinions by asking people:
The council has been canvassing local opinion/local people to get their thoughts on the proposed housing development.

    3. canvass (SUGGEST) verb [T] UK FORMAL
to suggest an idea or plan for consideration:
Wind and wave power are now being seriously canvassed as the solution to our energy problems.

    Good luck!
