is it embarrassing to be "on standby"? "passengers were obliged to go on standby. " what's the meaning of "on standby" in this sentence. Thank u in advance.:)

Re: is it embarrassing to be "on standby"? 1st guess: they were forced to take unreserved seats (if available). they had no prior reservation and had to count on probable vacant lots.

You should use the context. Both interpretations are probable.
