it depense on the time you are talking about.
if you say (the best team i KNEW...) is used when for example your father is talking with you, and saying about his youth. for example he says: the best football team i knew in 1980s was Manchester United.

but if you want to say: (The best team i know...) means the best team i know right now. for example you may say: the best football team i know (at this time) is Barcelona.
because Manchester United was a great team in the past, and Barcelona is a great team right now.
