use of comma

I am using microsoft word type a date "January, 2001" the spell check option corrects this by eliminating the comma. Is this correct?

You should have the comma between the month and the year, as above. However:

• 21 January, 2001

Using the day/month/year format, you do not need to have a comma between the day and the month.
