Re: What's shimmy? (Verb Form) It also refers to a dance, which became popular in the 1920s. I think it was based on African dancing.
If you "shimmy", you keep your torso as still as possible, hold your arms slightly downward and away from your body, with your hands palm-down, but at an angle of approximately 45 degrees to your lower arms, and move alternate shoulders forward in time to the music.
