" than expected" or " than was expected"

A: "I finished it sooner than expected."
B: "I finished it sooner than was expected."

which one is correct? and how do you paraphrase or explain it grammatically?

They're both OK. The first is using an adjective, and the second uses a passive form. With the second, the implication is that the expectation was probably not yours but from elsewhere.
