Could someone please be kind enough to tell me which choice should be filled into the blank of the last paragraph, "end" or "and" or what else?

There are several possibilities here.

For instance, one refers to the physical nature of the phone line. In other words, what does a phone line have two of?

Another refers to the person who answers a phone. What is a quite formal word that can be used of both people who participate in a call?

So I would guess either "end" (i.e. of the line, as you suggest), or "party" (as in person). Or perhaps "caller".
