differences!

I would like to know the differences between "so that", "because", "that","although", "as long as","as if"

How can I explain the use of although in this example?

example:
"I joined the class although I spoke english much better than the other students"

It shows a contrast- logically, if you spoke much better, you wouldn't join the class, but would choose a higher level.
