    Default idiom-what does that mean.

    Dear teacher:
    one of my friends used this,'I am down in/at my heels.' what does this mean? My friend says it means,' I am broke.' Is this right? If it has other meaning please let me know.

    Yes, it refers to someone who is in poor financial condition. Some believe that the expression originally referred to someone who is so poor that the heels of their shoes are worn down and they can't afford a new pair.
