bags of rice?

I read this from a book called "Reaching Out in Love: Stories Told by Mother Teresa" and am pretty confused:

"...there was some noise on the roof, where bags of rice had been stacked for protection against thieves. A group of men were busy pulling away the bags of rice..."

Is it saying that they used bags of rice as a protection against thieves or they hid those bags of rice on the roof so thieves wouldn't steal?

It sounds as though they stacked the bags of rice on the roof for protection, not to protect the bags of rice from thieves

Isn't it strange? Those bags of rice themselves are something that needs protection as well, aren't they?

It sounds as if they put them on the roof to keep them away from thieves to me.

Still reading the same little book, it says,

"...You will be pleased to know that the heat in Lucknow has been really hot! So our Lucknow house was founded on Burning Love. It is good to burn with the heat of God outside since we don't burn with the heat of God in our hearts."

Can anybody explain to me what Mother Theresa was implying in the last sentence? Because to me, it seems more logical to say " It is good to burn with the heat of God outside since we also burn with the heat of God in our hearts."

I suppose she's suggesting that we are not godly enough.
