    Default Him or His

Could anyone tell me whether the use of 'him' in the following sentence is correct?

I'm sure this personality development is all part of him learning how to communicate.

I though 'his' is correct because it relates to 'learning' rather than 'of'. Thank you in advance.

You could use either him or his, without any change in meaning.

Additionally, "learning" functions as a gerund, a noun, in that context, so the possessive adjective "his" would be the better grammatical choice.
