Default Please help me!

Dear teachers,

Could you please describe differences of meaning among the following sentences?

(a) He said he would visit us when the weather was finer.

(b) He said he would visit us when the weather is finer.

(c) He said he will visit us when the weather is finer.

Many thanks in advance!

Hello Spoon

#1 puts more emphasis on the past-ness of the utterance. The tenses are therefore in accord with "said".

#3 puts more emphasis on the content of the utterance. The tenses that relate to the content are therefore in accord with the expected time-frame of the content.

#2 puts the utterance itself and the intention to visit in the past, and the time-frame of the visit in the present.

It's all very flexible...

MrP
