Default About "Had now "

I am confused with this sentence,

"This state of things had now lasted for three days,..."

Why they are using "had now" ?

Hello Sabriguven, welcome to UsingEnglish!

Is it the use of "had lasted" or the use of "now" that puzzles you?

now (adverb) is used in statements which specify the length of time up to the present or past situation that something has/had lasted; I would say that the word now has something to do with emphasis.

We use 'now' in past narratives to mean 'at that moment'.
