coma or not coma before "and"

Hi again:

I have found myself thinking over this (surely) simple problem and I would like to ask a professional for some kind of advice.

In Spanish there is no necessity of coma before the preposition "and" in order to separate sentences. Actually, it is incorrect.

Notwithstanding, I have seen this coma many times in English letters, books and all over the Internet.

Is it necessary the coma before "and" in some cases?

Which ones?
