| SVOC consider+[object+object complement] 1. Mary considered her friend wise and handsome. ==>her friend is wise and handsome SVOO give+indirect object+direct object 2. Will the president of the school give the graduates their diplomas? ==>The president will give their diplomas to them. SVC is+subject complement 3. To be a hard worker is to be a success. ==> To be X is to be Y. SVC+adjunct be+[[subject complement]+[adjunct]] 4. Be kind and loving, even to those who do not seem to like you. ==> Imperative structure: (You) be kind and loving. SVOC appoint+[object+object complement] 5. The Queen appointed my friend governor of the new state. ==> My friend is the governor. :D |

| I changed #1 and #2. The rest are OK. :D #1 is Pattern 7 (Subj + Predicate Direct Object Adjective Complement) #2 is Pattern 3 (Subj + Predicate + Indirect Object + Direct Object) #3 is Pattern 4 (Subj + Linking Verb + Predicate Noun) #4 is Pattern 5 (Subj + Linking Verb + Predicate adjective) #5 is pattern 6 (Subj + Predicate + Direct Object + Object Complement) #1- 'wise and handsome' modifies 'her friend': her friend is wise and handsome. Sentence 1 is Pattern 7: S+V+DO+AdjC 1. Mary (S) considered (V) her friend (DO) wise and handsome (AdjC). Mary = subject considered = verb her friend = direct object wise and handsome = adjective complement ==== #2- 'their diplomas' does not modify 'the graduates': *the graduates are their diplomas (incorrect). Sentence 2 is Pattern 3: S+V+IO+DO 2. Will the president of the school (S) give (V) the graduates (IO) their diplomas (DO)? the president of the school = subject give = verb the graduates = indirect object their diplomas = direct object ==== 'a success' is a noun. Sentence 3 is Pattern 4: S+V+PredN 3. To be a hard worker (S) is (V) to be a success (PredN). to be a hard worker = subject is = linking verb to be a success = predicate noun ==== 'kind and loving' are adjectives. Sentence 4 is Pattern 5: S+V+PredAdj 4. Be (V) kind and loving (PredAdj), even to those who do not seem to like you. You = subject (The subject has been omitted because the sentence is in the imperative) Be = linking verb kind and loving, even to those who do not seem to like you = predicate adjective ==== 'governor of the state' modifies 'my friend'. Sentence 5 is Pattern 6: S+V+DO+OC 5. The Queen (S) appointed (V) my friend (DO) governor of the new state (OC). The Queen = subject appointed = verb my friend = direct object governor of the new state = object complement :D |

| I thought 'predicate' = verb + everything else. |

Ex: Eve gave Adam the apple. predicate Subject = Eve Predicate = gave Adam the apple. If we want to look inside the predicate, we parse it as follows, Verb = gave Direct object = the apple Indirect Object = Adam :D |
