Meaning of trough used for weather forecast.

Hello!

Here I've got a short extract from some Australian news paper: "Easterly winds and a weak trough are causing showers in northern QLD."
I'm especially interested in the meaning of "trough" in this sentece. Could that have something to do with an atmosphere pressure especially low atmosphere pressure?.

In weather forecasting, trough means, a long region of low atmospheric pressure. Its shape is similar to that of a (food) trough, a long narrow food container for animals.
