Are or Is

Can you tell me which is grammatically correct:
The next couple are Deb and Mike
or
The next couple is Deb and Mike

As far as I learnt "both" are correct:
-If u want to take the couple as a whole, u use "is"
-If u want to take them individually, then "are"
