Default Is this a simple sentence or a compound?

Hi every one..

I know that a compound sentence has to have at least two simple sentences , but this sentence confused me; I don't know if it's simple or compound because it has one verb !

Man is guided by reason and beast by instinct.

Can anyone help?

And Thanks for everything.

There is only one main verb in the exact wording, but there is ellipsis of a second verb- the sense of the sentence is of a compound one.

Hi tdol

First ,thanks a lot for your answer, I really appreciated.

But I don't understand ...

the sense of the sentence is of a complex one.

When you said the sense of the sentence is of a complex one, you meant that it's not exactly complex?

From what I've learned :This sentence cannot be complex without a subordinator.

I'm just trying to learn something here ,so please correct me if I'm wrong.

Thanks for your respond.

The full version of the sentence would read like this:
Man is guided by reason and beast (is guided) by instinct.
The second verb is omitted, but I think it is still a compound one (sorry, I typed complex by mistake yesterday). We're in a grey area here, but there is ellipsis to me and that the sentence is understood as having a compound structure underlying it. In the exact wording, there is no second verb, but it is lurking invisibly underneath for me.
