Would you please tell me if this sentence is right or not?and if it has a normal pattern or not?Is it a common way of saying such sentences containing (abreast)?

The training planes were flying four abreast.

Yes, that's the right position for "abreast".

It's probably more usual to use "abreast" in the context of people or animals, but your sentence is perfectly comprehensible.
