between among

I should know this,
but I can't remember the exception(s) to the rule that between is used for 2 people, places or things, and among is used for 3 or more. I know there are occasions when between is acceptable, maybe even preferred, for more than 2, and it is a logical exception, but I can't pull up that file.

If it's a sequence, we often use 'between'- between meals- there are more than two meals, but not at one time. Also, we can use 'among' with fewer than three- we could say 'among friends' with two friends because the meaning is not about physical location.
