Question "live up on" and "live up in"...

Hi

Does any one have any ideas of how to explain the use of these two phrases?

The sentence in the book says.... "They lived up on Hol...(place name" and my co-worker wants to try and explain the meaning of it or show and different way of writing the sentence but still give the same meaning....

eg. use - "They lived up in....."

I am at a total lose as to how to explain this one...... so that a non-native would understand....

Thanks in advance....

I'd use up on for a high place and up in for a city. What's Hol?

"Hol" was what the place name started with in the story and I couldn't remember the spelling and didn't have the document in front of me... sorry!!

So would it be safe to assume that if the story used "lived up on..." then the place mentioned is up on a hill or moutain etc or could it also just be a village / town that is "up" in direction from the speaker/ writers home?

Thanks for your help.

"Live up on" is also used when referring to the street on which someone lives. "He lives up on Hollywood Boulevard" or "She lives up on East 68th Street."

'Up' can also be used not just for direction but for a sense of an important place- someone from a small town or village could say 'she lives up in London' regardless of the direction or elevation.
