==> b. is the correct choice.

a. Either of the two books. :( ('either...or' is a set pair)
b. Neither of the two books. :D ('neither' can stand alone)

With the first, I can't see what is wrong with the first answer. Maybe it's a British English thing, but both sound fine. I agree about the second answer.

I agree. In the first one, a and b are the same (although a would be used more often. I also agree about the second answer (and would have said the same thing).
