"system" is defined here. Think, "language system". How is it similar and different from, say, a computer system?
"combining words": speakers combine words to form phrases and sentences. For example, Max + ate + cake. Word order differs across languages. For example, English is an SVO language: subject first, verb second, object third. Prepositions and adjectives come before the nouns they modify. Compare that word order with Japanese: it's an SOV language: verb last.
