Default compound words

I am wondering why it is said that compound words are solid blocks. Do we have any methods to teach those words?

Welcome, tranthuytien.

To make a compound word, you add two words together, like this,

dog (one word), a pet
house (one word), a place where people live
doghouse (one word), a place where a dog lives

The word doghouse combines the meanings from dog and house to create a new meaning, a solid block. Something that is "solid" is unbreakable or non-divisible. That is, doghouse doesn't mean, "a place where people and dogs live".

All the best.
